In these 9 countries, you won't find a McDonald's

McDonald's fries and hamburger

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: the 9 countries where you can't find a McDonald's.

THE HORROR. Yes, this is really nightmare material. So there are countries where you have no, I repeat NO, McDonald's. How do they deal with their hangovers then? Sometimes a Big Mac is just the only thing you crave, right? And those soggy fries, you definitely need those in your life?

So consider this list as a list of countries that don't need to be high on your bucket list.

1. North Korea

Okay, you might have seen this one coming. And unfortunately, I would genuinely love to visit here once. I have a strange fascination with North Korea. Too bad. Missed opportunity.

2. Bolivia
Not because McDonald's is not allowed here, it – so strange this – just didn't work out. In 2014, the very last burger was sold and then it was schluss.

3. Macedonia
There have never been many branches here (only seven) and they were only around for 16 years. Due to a disagreement (just a big fight) between the head of European McDonald's and the owner of the Macedonian franchise branches, they unfortunately had to close all seven.

4. Ghana
McDonald's is allowed here, and maybe people are waiting for it, but the economic situation simply doesn't allow it.

5. Zimbabwe
This African country does just fine without the golden M. McDonald's has been here before, but due to the economic situation, it has closed. But there is hope: since 2010, there has been talk of a comeback, but nothing concrete is known about that yet.

6. Iceland
This surprised me: until 2009, McDonald's only had three branches here. It has never been very big, but when the economic crisis hit, those three also closed their doors. The government is fine with that, as they advocate for a healthy lifestyle.

7. Yemen
The economic situation is also one of the reasons for the absence of McDonald's here, but also because it's American; that doesn't sit well.

8. Bermuda
McDonald's was too ordinary and cheap for Bermuda: ‘It is not Bermudian. McDonald's cheapens wherever it goes.’ There you go.

9. Montenegro
McDonald's is not banned here, but it's not welcome either. The government wouldn't encourage it because it's unhealthy, and thus the small mobile McDonald's that was found in the capital in the early 2000s was not exactly welcomed with open arms.
