8 things you should avoid if you have fine hair

When it comes to the right hair care, the type of hair you have is very important. For example, if you have fine hair (like me), it is actually good to use as few products as possible, unlike when you are blessed with a full head of curls.
Because we are bombarded with various advice and countless magical remedies (people with fine hair are often the victims of this, in my opinion), I have compiled a handy list of tips and things you should better avoid if you have fine hair. I would say; make the most of it.
1. Using too many different products together
Often, people with fine hair are sold all sorts of products at the hairdresser, and I have also fallen for this regularly. All these special remedies are supposedly supposed to provide a fuller hairstyle, but nothing could be further from the truth because the more products you use, the heavier your hair becomes, and that is exactly what we absolutely do NOT want. Less is more when it comes to fine hair. Therefore, it is better to keep your hair care as simple as possible. For example, go for a lightweight shampoo specially developed for fine hair that strengthens your locks and adds volume. This saves you a lot of money and decision stress.
2. Using the wrong shampoo
As I just mentioned, you should go for a shampoo that is specially developed for fine hair. A common mistake is purchasing a shampoo that is not intended for one specific hair type, which greatly reduces the chance that it will do much good for your fine angel hair. Of course, you don't have to buy an expensive shampoo, but preferably one that is free from parabens and silicones.
3. Choosing the wrong hairstyle
Some hairstyles simply do not work with fine hair. For example, if you show your hairdresser a picture of a full voluminous fringe, you hopefully understand that it will never look like that on you. So, in addition to a good shampoo, invest in a good hairdresser who knows what hairstyle suits you best. A few layers can work wonders and give your hairstyle more volume.
4. Washing your hair too often
Washing your hair excessively can lead to increased oil production, which makes it even more limp. How often should you wash it then? A maximum of three times a week. At first, your hair may get greasy faster, but once you get through this, you will get a healthier mane back. The ideal solution for between washes? A talc-free dry shampoo that also gives you more volume, a win-win.
5. Using too few hair masks
People with fine hair often avoid hair masks because they are afraid that their hairstyle will become limp. But dear people, this is a big misconception: a hair mask is actually vital for fine hair because using it can prevent hair breakage and thus lead to healthier and fuller hair. Therefore, try to apply a hair mask once a week and preferably let it soak in overnight. This way, you repair the damage and give your locks a beautiful shine.
6. Using the wrong brush
Finding the right brush is also crucial for fine hair. You already don't have a huge mane, so it makes sense that you don't want to pull half of your hair out while brushing. Fine hair unfortunately often means a lot of knots and tangles, so you need a brush that can remove these gently. Generally, round brushes are recommended. I have been using the Mason Pearson brush. This brush is quite expensive, but I promise you that you will not regret this purchase; your tangles will disappear like snow in the sun.
7. Using the wrong blow-drying technique
Many people with fine hair blow-dry their hair straight down to prevent frizz. But this technique actually results in a very flat look with little volume, so that doesn't seem to be the intention. How should you blow-dry your hair then? By flipping your head upside down and starting at the roots. This technique provides the perfect blow-out without damaging your vulnerable points.
8. Wearing extensions
The last and perhaps biggest no-go for fine hair: using extensions. Especially the clip-in variety, which women often wear for special occasions. No matter how beautiful it looks, these clip-ins unfortunately cause a lot of stress for your scalp and locks. So instead, try to take the best care of your fine hair possible, so hopefully one day you won't need those extensions anymore.
