9 reasons why you want to book a weekend in Luxembourg City

When spring has begun and the sun rays have truly reached the Netherlands, I get the urge to book weekend getaways every year again. And because I also love road trips, my next destination is a bit closer to home — and yet one where I have not been before. On the agenda is: Luxembourg City. From Amsterdam, it's just over four hours drive, so ideal. Now I have already read a bit about it, because I actually knew scandalously little about Luxembourg. Are you also looking for a destination close to home and yet surprising? Then think about a few days in Luxembourg.
1. It's close by
I mentioned it briefly; but I love road trips. Hitting the road by car, music on, wonderful. Ideal to go to Luxembourg City; from Amsterdam it's just over four hours drive.
2. It's easily accessible
By car it's of course easy, but once at the destination it's not always that convenient. In Luxembourg City, that's not a problem: public transport is free throughout the country. Sooo NS, are you following along? How great is that.
3. A nice mix of old and new
Luxembourg City is perhaps best known for its modern architecture, like the large bank buildings and EU offices in the Kirchberg district — but the old part of the city is simply on the UNESCO World Heritage List. A really nice mix and incredibly fun to walk through.

4. Luxembourg City has the best hospitality
Yes, that's what I often get most excited about during a weekend or vacation. What could be better than settling down on a terrace, doing nothing, people-watching, and enjoying a glass of wine and good food? That makes me incredibly happy, you know. And luckily, that's very possible in Luxembourg: from fine dining to nice cafes.
5. A fun nightlife
Okay, we're still in the hospitality corner; but this time because of the nice bars. In the Clausen and Grund neighborhoods, you'll find many cozy streets filled with bars to have a drink after dinner — and many of the best restaurants are also located in this area. You can also find many nice cafes and restaurants in the old town and on the Place d’Armes.
6. Walking through Luxembourg City
Since corona, I have also become a big fan of walking, and I keep that up during my weekend getaways. The advantage is that Luxembourg is not very large, so you can make it as crazy as you want; either go into nature or wander through the city (and do a bit of shopping in the meantime). On my agenda is the Circular Walk Wenzel, a walk through the city that takes you past all the historical highlights.

7. Cycling through Luxembourg City
Fun: you can also rent a bike to explore the different neighborhoods. For example, to do the UNESCO Bike Tour, which is just under 10 kilometers of cycling. A nice workout too, and you really see a lot of the old city this way.

8. The best museums
Luxembourg has the best museums that (very conveniently) are all within walking distance of each other. Also check the MuseumSmile, these are seven museums that are within one mile. And there is really something for everyone: from the museum of contemporary art to the city museum full of history, but also a beautiful castle.
9. Nature is just around the corner
If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a moment, you can easily get into nature from Luxembourg City. For example, to go wine tasting along the Moselle, or to go mountain biking in Minett. The most beautiful castles can be found in Guttland, and if you prefer to walk and/or hike, you are well off in Mullerthal and Éislek. It's nice to alternate a weekend in the city with a day outdoors.
Well, as I said; my date is already planned for this weekend getaway. After returning, I will treat you to the best tips for restaurants, hotels, and things to do — unless you have already decided to head that way yourself. I completely understand.
