The story of Trijntje and Suus

Just email Suus, and I'll make sure you get on the guest list. A message from Trijntje. Exactly at the right moment, because I've been in a virtual split for weeks about whether or not to go to her Burt Bacharach tour in Haarlem. The list of pros is short but particularly firm. Trijntje, Burt Bacharach: duh. The list that throws sand in the engine is a bit longer. Mother's Day, a Sunday afternoon that we actually spend at the beach, beautiful weather (you'll always see that)... But then Trijntje's message pushes me in the right direction: just go. Walking to the theater in sunny weather is also delightful, and it's Mother's Day after all? Then I choose what I want. So with two girls to Trijn. I email to suus@trijntje.nl and immediately think of a type. I see a firm ‘no nonsense‘ producer in front of me. Probably one with two phones, always a cardboard cup of coffee in hand, sneakers, a pair of jeans, and a hoodie from a previous tour she worked on. Something like that.

Suus replies promptly. We are on the guest list, and she wishes us a lot of fun. So far, Suus.

Trijntje is Trijntje is Trijntje. As soon as she opens her mouth, my eyes are already pricking. They are also programmed according to the Pavlov principle. When she sings, I start to cry. And my eyes know that. Fortunately, I learn today that Burt Bacharach says that you are ‘just not good’. Moreover, we are all easily fooled after spending two years in isolation.

I look at the band. They are young, as I will learn later. Except for Hans Vroomans, the gifted pianist. Trijntje talks about how corona affected us and especially how it thwarted the lives of young musicians. With a wrinkle-free diploma, so fresh, from the Conservatory in your pocket and only closed doors in front of you. That's why Trijntje responded to an open advertisement on Facebook where a young singer offered herself for any job. Making coffee, answering emails; she didn't care, as long as it was with an artist so she could at least still move in the world where she once hoped to shine. So Trijn drank coffee, at a distance of one and a half meters, and the woman got the job. On one condition: she had to keep singing. Every day. And she does, Trijntje tells: ‘Because you have already been watching and listening to her for an hour.’ So Suus. Or Suzy V. A bit shy, she was pushed forward where she sang ‘Breaking up is so hard to do’ so vulnerably and small that even my girls were almost in tears.

Trijntje's goal is to give Suzy V more followers on Instagram every day than the day before. Yesterday we hopefully delivered 51 fresh followers, but if I could make that tenfold today with you... Because to stay with Burt Bacharach for a moment: what the world needs now is love, sweet love. And a little support in the form of a follower for someone with talent and work ethic, that's the least effort imaginable.

Moreover, you can say later when she is a big Suus: I was there as one of the first.
