Billie Eilish is outed by Variety and is not happy

Billie Eilish is not amused, to put it mildly. Last weekend she came out as bisexual, although that was not her intention at all. And that’s why she is not exactly happy with the (also online) magazine Variety, which outed her without her wanting it. She was on the cover during their ‘Power of Women’ edition and discussed her admiration for and attraction to women. She said: ‘I have deep connections with women in my life, the friends in my life, the family in my life. I feel physically attracted to them. But I also feel intimidated by them, and by their beauty and presence.’

That was not intended as a coming out by Billie, but it was interpreted that way, and when she stood on the red carpet last Saturday and was interviewed by Variety, the interviewer immediately asked about it. ‘Was it your intention to come out?’

‘No, it wasn’t. But I thought a little: wasn’t it clear? I didn’t realize that people didn’t know. I don’t really believe in that. I’m more like: why can’t we all just exist? I’ve been doing this for a very long time and I just haven’t talked about it. Oops. But then I saw the article and thought: oh, apparently I came out today. Okay, cool.’

She takes that quite positively, but on her Instagram she still gives a jab today: ‘Thank you Variety, for my award, but also for outing my sexuality at eleven o'clock in the morning instead of talking about something else that actually matters besides that I like boys and girls. Please leave me alone about it, who cares, stream all What Was I Made For.’ There, that’s that.
