If your partner has said this to you, it indicates gaslighting

Gaslighting happens in so many relationships, but often people don't even realize it. It can quickly go from bad to worse: you may end up not even realizing it's happening, and your self-confidence takes a big hit. Completely unjustified, because you don't deserve that; so be careful if your partner says these things to you.

1. ‘That never happened’

Not only does your partner confuse you with this, but according to psychologists, it also makes you more dependent on your partner — ‘because they must know better.’

2. ‘You're too sensitive’

This also causes you to start doubting yourself, and if you hear this often enough, you might stop trusting your own perceptions and, as you might guess, become dependent on your partner.

3. ‘You're acting crazy, and others think so too’

These texts are often used when there has been gaslighting for a longer period of time. When you constantly doubt yourself and this is said to you, your fears are confirmed: is it really all your fault?

4. ‘You have such a bad memory’

Are you starting to see a pattern? Here too, you start doubting yourself again, while the perception and memories of the conversation are always different for everyone. But when your partner gaslights you, only your memory is not the correct one — and theirs is the only one that is.

5. ‘I'm sorry you think I wanted to hurt you’

Don't let the word ‘sorry’ mislead you: this is far from an excuse, and that goes for all excuses that start with ‘I'm sorry that you...’. This still gives you the impression that you are the guilty one or the instigator.

6. ‘You should have known I would react this way’

And with this statement, you are also given the responsibility, and thus the blame, placed on you. While it is absolutely not your responsibility how others react — but you might start to forget that.
