Wow: this is how much the average engagement ring costs

Oh yes, the engagement season has officially begun. At least, if I am to believe social media. I only have to scroll a few times and I already see another couple in love standing by the Christmas tree, one on their knee with a huge ring in the lead role. I get it, it is not for nothing the most wonderful time of the year, so why not use this time to seal your love with an engagement? That romance does come with a price, and not a small one either. Because although spending three months' salary on the perfect engagement ring is now passé, people still spend an incredible amount of money on it.

According to American research, the average cost of an engagement ring is currently about $6,000, which is approximately €5,500. This is likely due to a few outliers that significantly raise the average, as that same research shows that about a third of people spend between €1,000 and €4,000 on their engagement ring. 8 percent of ring buyers spend less than €1,000, which is still an enormous amount of money.

Still not sure how much money you should spend on your partner's dream ring? Pay attention to the following points to make an informed choice.

Financial situation
Assess which price range feels good for you and don't let yourself be pressured by how it ‘should be’. Evaluate your current financial situation to determine what you can afford and remember that there are many beautiful rings available today for a fraction of the above average.

Expectations of your partner
Make sure the ring aligns with your partner's taste, regardless of the price tag. Ask what he or she likes (every woman has a Pinterest board with a few dream rings on it) or go ring shopping together. If you want it to be a surprise, ask friends or family for advice (note to my future fiancé: Ask. My. Sister).

Meaning of the ring
Choose a ring that matches your partner's personality, which is more valuable than the size of the stone. Consider heirlooms or alternatives to diamonds. Depending on your partner's preferences, there is so much beauty to be found.

Opt for a temporary ring
Are you currently a bit short on cash but can't wait to propose to the love of your life? Consider a temporary engagement ring while you save for the final ring. Temporary rings are often cheaper, so this approach can save costs in the long run and ensure that you can ultimately surprise your partner with their dream ring.
