Dating Disasters: ‘I ended up with an uncharming thud on the ground’

In Dating Disasters vertellen anonieme lezers over hun gênantste, meest tenenkrommende en dramatische dates. Deze week: when you fall for someone very quickly.

The rain was pouring down in buckets. A good sign for a first date, my best friend assured me. Rain brings luck, after all. Unfortunately, I thought otherwise and said goodbye to my perfectly styled hair when I saw that the downpour had no intention of stopping anytime soon. That this would be the least of my problems, I would find out later. As always, I was running late again, and so I hurried through the wet alleys, my umbrella almost useless against the constant stream of water falling from the sky. My hair stuck to my face as predicted, and my clothes felt damp, but I was still very much looking forward to my date.

I had a date with Alex, a handsome man I had met at a party and with whom I had been texting a lot over the past few weeks. We had agreed to meet at a romantic restaurant, and despite the rain, I hoped the evening would be just as magical as I had imagined it. I could see it all in my mind: him, me, the rain that seemed to never stop, warming up with a glass of red wine and maybe a kiss at the end of the evening...

When I finally stepped into the restaurant, my heart started racing. Alex was sitting at a table by the window and was just as handsome as I remembered him. His smile was warm and inviting. I wanted to walk over to him elegantly, close my umbrella gracefully, and turn on my flirt mode to the max, but the slippery floor had other plans.

The moment I made eye contact with my date, I slipped on an unnoticed puddle of water. My umbrella flew out of my hand and I landed with an ungraceful thud on the ground. It felt like time stood still while I lay there, soaked and dying of embarrassment.

Alex immediately jumped up. “Are you okay?” he asked as he helped me up. I laughed nervously and tried to regain my dignity. “Just a dramatic entrance, nothing serious,” I mumbled as I wiped the wet hair from my face.

“I was hoping you would fall for me, but not like this,” he said with a smile. It was so cliché, but I was glad he could make something light out of this embarrassing moment. We took our seats at the table and the rest of the evening was filled with fun conversations, delicious food, and uncontrollable laughter about my fall. You can say a lot about my dating life, but I won't forget this evening anytime soon.
