The yoni
In the world of tantra, the word yoni is used to refer to the vulva. The word comes from Sanskrit and Hebrew and means ‘source’, ‘resting place’, ‘womb’, and ‘vagina’. Nowadays, the entire vulva is usually meant when talking about the yoni. In Hinduism, the yoni is a symbol that represents the feminine energy of the goddess Shakti. The yoni is thus seen as a very important part of the body, where energy, but also memories and traumas, are said to be stored.

Purpose of a yoni massage
If you have a vulva, there can be various reasons to consider a yoni massage. A good yoni massage is a healing therapy session. Without having to talk to a psychologist or therapist, you can work on various mental and physical complaints through a yoni massage. During a yoni massage, you can allow old traumas to resurface in order to process them in this way. Unprocessed trauma can sometimes be stored in the yoni, leading to stiff hips, a tense pelvis, and sometimes even vaginismus. Stored trauma can be very large but also very small. When thinking of trauma, you might immediately think of rape and sexual abuse, but even very small traumas, such as pushing a tampon in too hard or too quickly, can cause tension.

Process of a yoni massage
Every therapist, every masseur, and every practice has its own way and method for this special massage. So make sure to research beforehand what feels comfortable for you and ensure that you find a practice that aligns with this. What is often customary is the following.

First contact
You explain your intentions for the yoni massage by phone or email. The therapist decides whether they can help with this, and if it seems like a good match for both of you, you schedule an appointment together. You will be informed in advance about what to bring and how long the session will last.

Introduction and conversation
Upon arrival, the therapist introduces themselves, and you take the time to get used to each other over a cup of tea. You discuss your intentions again, and it is important to let the therapist know if you are currently feeling good and if you have been pregnant before. If you feel comfortable and safe, the massage can begin.

Relaxation and meditation
You are given time to change and possibly freshen up. Some therapists choose to do a short meditation together first, after which you can lie down on the massage table without clothing. The therapist will first massage your back so that you can relax and get used to the touch of a stranger.

External massage
The massage begins at the groin and lower abdomen. Just like with a stiff neck, there can be ‘knots’ here. A good masseur can gently massage these stiff spots loose. It may happen that emotions and memories are released during this process. Only when you have clearly given consent will the therapist touch your yoni. The labia are massaged, but normally the clitoris is skipped. After all, the intent of the massage is not to become aroused.

Internal massage
If you indicate that you are ready, the inside of your yoni, or your vagina, can also be massaged. For this, you must again give consent. An experienced masseur can also recognize the tense spots inside the vagina. When these are massaged, you can feel and experience various things. It may happen that you see things in front of you like a kind of dream or that you feel your energy starting to flow, which can feel like a kind of tingling throughout your body.

Take your time
A yoni massage cannot be compared to a spa day. It has much more to do with a therapy session than with a relaxing massage. The experience is of course different for everyone, but it often happens that many emotions are released, so make sure to schedule a free afternoon or evening for yourself after the session so that you can recover peacefully.
