Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: restaurant tips from Gordon Ramsay.

Now that dining out is becoming increasingly expensive, it is of course important that if we do it, we do it right. Personally, I (unfortunately) have a habit of always ordering exactly the wrong thing, and I would like to change that. Fortunately, Gordon Ramsay has a golden tip for that, because there is something he will never order in a restaurant. Of course, I gladly adopt Gordon Ramsay's standards.

According to him, you should always be on your guard when reading the menu and find a certain category of words.

‘Suspicious boasting’
That's what Gordon Ramsay calls it himself, and he means dishes that are described as ‘famous’ or ‘best in the country’ without any further explanation. ‘Who says that it is so? Who has ever called it that?’ says Ramsey.

He also adds that this is especially the case when there are specials off the menu: ‘Specials are there to disappear during the evening. When a restaurant has ten specials, it’s no longer special.’ And when that is the case, you should be very cautious and actually not order it. His tip? Ask what the ‘dish of the day’ was the day before. If it’s the same, you know enough: it’s not a special.

Gordon tips: table for two
Then he has another tip that may not be appreciated by many restaurant owners, namely: always reserve for three people when you are two. Then your chance of getting a tucked-away, soulless table is much smaller, and you just say that the third person has fallen ill. Hmm, I think I’ll skip this one, but I will definitely take those other tips with me.
