Dating Disasters: ‘His message was clearly not meant for me’

In Dating Disasters vertellen anonieme lezers over hun gênantste, meest tenenkrommende en dramatische dates. Deze week: it can't get worse than this on a date.
‘Our date wasn't fun, I know that myself. But he didn't have to rub it in so hard. My date with Maarten was one of those where you just meet up because you've been running around the dating world like a headless chicken for so long that you just put your money on someone who is totally not your type. You never know, maybe a success story will come out of it. If you think this is a good idea, I strongly advise against it, because Maarten and I were really a complete mismatch.
It all started with the greeting. He went for a kiss on my cheek, I went for a friendly hug. That miscommunication resulted in a sort of awkward headbutt that I wanted to laugh off to break the ice, but he ignored it. And that's how it went the whole evening. While I was trying with all my might to liven up the conversation with anecdotes and stories about my own life, he responded to everything with indifference. At one point, he was even uninterestedly looking at his phone the whole time.
Just when I wanted to ask him what he was actually doing, my phone went off. It was a message from my date. For a moment, I thought he was joking by texting instead of talking, until I read his message. ‘I really regret going on a date with her, are you still in the city?’ Yep, that message was clearly not meant for me. Things got even more awkward when he realized at the same moment that he had sent the message to me. Of course, I immediately got up, wished him a lot of fun with his friends, and suggested that they could surely help him with the bill, because I wasn't going to pay a cent for this joke of a date. In the end, I never heard from him again, and that's just as well.’
