Psychology says: it is very dangerous if you enjoy watching true crime

This really feels like a personal attack, because I love true crime. And I actually thought that was very healthy and normal, but apparently not every psychologist agrees with that. Dr. Thema Bryant, psychologist, was a guest on Mel Robbins' podcast and shared her views on true crime and on people who love it.

‘If your idea of relaxation before bed is to watch three episodes of Law & Order, I would like to ask you why your way of relaxing is to watch traumas.’ She continues: ‘Some of us grew up in a stressful environment and then see calm and peace as boring. Coming home alone to a quiet environment feels unfamiliar because it is something that is not known to you.’

It is a vision that Dr. Elizabeth Jeglic agrees with. She is a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and also links having personal traumas to watching true crime.

‘Just as some people tend to pursue a psychology degree to better understand and heal themselves. We have so many people studying psychology who have a history with mental illnesses or are still dealing with them.’

‘In that same vein, I think it is very plausible that people dealing with traumas enjoy watching true crime to experience these traumas again, in a safe environment where they have more control.’

She also recommends that if you love true crime, it might be time to dig deeper into your own experiences and feelings. Noted.
