Netflix tip of the day: MH370: The Plane That Disappeared

It may be the biggest mystery of the past ten, twenty years: what happened to flight MH370? This flight from Malaysia Airlines departed from Kuala Lumpur but never reached its destination, Beijing. Air traffic control suddenly saw the plane disappear from the radar, after which a large search began — without results. Two years later, in 2016, wreckage was found in Madagascar that is believed to be from the MH370 flight.

That the plane crashed seemed pretty clear quite quickly. But why? What happened? Was it a deliberate action by the pilot? Did something happen on board, was there a malfunction? And where did the plane ultimately crash? The last location that air traffic control received was over the South China Sea. However, the wreckage was found near Madagascar and the plane was reportedly spotted an hour later, about 370 kilometers away, flying west.

It remains a great mystery and one that has always fascinated me, and many others. How can it be that a plane just disappears? In 2019, an article appeared in The Atlantic with a theory that seems very plausible to me. If this case also interests you, then it is definitely worth reading.

And now Netflix has also delved into it, resulting in a three-part docuseries. I have already watched the first episode and I find it very impressive, although it is indeed at times very American, which is of course to be expected from Netflix.

Although I am wary of episode 2 in which they will also discuss MH17, because according to a journalist who is interviewed, these two incidents are said to be related. Now I am really up for a good conspiracy theory, but this really goes too far for me. That is also the complaint that many viewers have: this docuseries leans a bit too much on theories instead of facts. Unfortunately, you can already notice this in the first episode.

All in all, definitely a recommendation, but don't get too carried away by what is said here. So watch critically.
