New York is no longer the most expensive city in the world

By

Last April I was there and I find this hard to imagine, because I really found it insanely expensive. The dollar is of course medium favorable and you shouldn't underestimate the tips either. All in all, it's quite an expensive trip, but hey: you know that in advance when you go to The Big Apple. This year, however, they have been kicked off the throne. The dubious honor of the most expensive city in the world no longer goes to NYC, but to a European city. The number two has also changed, as that honor goes to an Asian city. New York now comes in third place.

Where in the world are you spending the most money? That is in the Swiss city of Zurich. The funny thing is that New York has not been in that first place for the last few years (for at least eleven years), that was always Singapore, and that city is now in second place.

This list is compiled every year by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), which they call the Worldwide Cost of Living. This top ten is therefore drawn up after investigating what the most expensive cities in the world are to live in. It is striking that in recent years (Western) European cities are becoming increasingly expensive, although I secretly expected that one to be on this list. London I secretly expected that one to be on this list.

Curious about the entire top ten? Here it comes.

1. Zurich
2. Singapore
3. New York and Geneva
5. Hong Kong
6. Los Angeles
7. Paris
8. Tel Aviv and Copenhagen
10. San Francisco
