Thuisbezorgd.nl announces the most important food trends of 2024

For me, this is really the highlight of the week, pure relaxation; almost every Sunday I order via Thuisbezorgd.nl from my regular Thai place in Amsterdam. Sunday is my day of rest, in other words Netflix and Thuisbezorgd.nl. In that regard, I am really a creature of habit; every Sunday the Thai restaurant in question already knows that my order is coming (and also what exactly, because I literally order the same thing every time).

I thought I was a creature of habit, but I’m just going along with one of the trends that have been identified by Thuisbezorgd.nl. During an amazing lunch at the Amsterdam Supper Club, chef London Loy prepared five courses that each represented the trends of the coming year. I don’t want to make you even more jealous, but yes, this was really very delicious. I will definitely tell you what was prepared, but more importantly: what these trends are.

1. Mood food
Yes, this is the first and I immediately fall under this: choosing Thuisbezorgd.nl to support your mental well-being, for example by ordering a healthy meal when you are very stressed but have no time to cook, or for me every Sunday the ultimate relaxation moment (with a bad movie). Good food brings us in a good mood, and that will remain the case in 2024.

2. Zero Heroes
We saw this trend starting to emerge a bit last year, but it will only become more important, and that’s a good thing. Sustainability is becoming even more prominent. Of course, we already have the plastic surcharge for take-away and delivery packaging, but restaurants are also increasingly letting us know what they are doing to contribute to sustainability. A very positive development, if you ask me.

3. Melting pot of cultures
Oooh, what we were served during this trend at lunch… It makes me hungry again: a French crêpe with Surinamese plantain and peanut sauce. A dish I would love to recreate at home, but I fear my creation wouldn’t even come close to London’s. Maybe we can order it somewhere next year? We are going to see this more and more; different cultures coming together. The most famous example of this is of course the poke bowl, a Hawaiian dish that borrows many elements from Japanese cuisine.

4. Directly at home
Yep, I’m already fully participating in this trend: the supermarket hardly sees me anymore, because I just order everything at home. Convenience is key, and that will remain the case next year, so we are massively ordering our groceries from home, but meal kits are also becoming increasingly popular. Then you are cooking at home, without having to search for all the ingredients on the shelves. Ideal.

5. Flavor makers
Okay okay, I’m just a huge follower, because this trend is not unfamiliar to me either. And I actually find that only fun, because according to Thuisbezorgd.nl we get a lot of our food inspiration from social media like TikTok. Take for example the viral carbonara noodles (I think they are incredibly delicious), the sandwiches from Chun in Amsterdam, or a Big Mac Taco. TikToks about these dishes are still being made daily; with the arrival of TikTok, these types of food items have become more of a trend than ever. Just like fashion can be a trend or a song can be a hit, that is now also the case with food — and that will only increase.
