Two years ago, Master Boulanger Robèrt van Beckhoven came especially for King's Day with orange tompouces. Now this in itself is not remarkable, but noteworthy: you could only pick them up at the drive-thru because of corona. Thank goodness those kinds of scenes are now over and you can simply buy your orange tompouces again at the (pastry) baker or supermarket. It has been researched: on King's Day we want to eat orange tompouces en masse.

When it comes to the most sought-after item at the flea market, it turns out that the Dutch are quite foodies: food and drinks top the list, followed by games, household items, books, and art. According to the research, we prefer to sink our teeth into an orange tompouce: according to 41 percent of the Dutch, this is the tastiest King's Day treat. This way, the puff pastry treat leaves behind beer, bitterballen, and orange bitters.

At Hema, we haven't spotted them yet, but at Albert Heijn you can already buy orange tompouces. For €3.50, you can score a box with four pieces. Their regular tompouce came out on top in our supermarket tompouce test, so with a bit of luck, this variant is also a winner. Orange velvet over crispy layers that crackle to the soft heart...
