Netflix tip of the day: The Memory Game

Ooooh, I find this exciting. And I’m not even talking about the movie The Memory Game, which crashed into the top ten on Netflix this weekend. It’s a thriller and people are raving about it. Last Wednesday it went online, but since half of the Netherlands was at Lowlands, it’s only now being picked up. Ideal for recovering after spending the whole weekend at a festival. Although… It could very well give you quite a few heart palpitations. ‘Amazing, thrilling, and captivating movie’ is what’s being said about it on Twitter.
What I find exciting about it? This movie is based on the eponymous book by Nicci French, which I have really devoured multiple times (so a recommendation if you love reading). It’s truly an incredibly thrilling book, which was one of my favorites from the writing duo for a long time. And you know that if you’re a book lover, things can go completely wrong with a book adaptation. My other favorite Nicci French book was also adapted (Possessed by Me, or Killing Me Softly in English) and I’m still angry about that.
The positive reactions to The Memory Game give me good hope, so I’m going to start this with a lot of enthusiasm. What is the movie about? The Flemish Nathalie Deridder (Nicci French is a British duo, so the story has been adjusted here and there in terms of locations and names) disappeared 25 years ago, but during a family gathering, her body is found. She was a teenager when she disappeared – her Dutch friend Eva (Anna Drijver) was distraught after her disappearance.
With the discovery of her body, many things come back to Eva, who is determined to find out what exactly happened that night. That’s why she goes into hypnotherapy, where she gets help to bring memories to the surface. But are all the memories correct? And does she actually want to know everything?
Now online, so let’s watch.
