Whut: this is what the hairdresser can read from your hair

By

Your hairdresser secretly knows a lot about you; if you've spent a few hours in the hairdresser's chair, there's a good chance you've told your whole life story by now. After all, you have to kill time somehow. But hairdressers also know things that we prefer not to tell them. And they can read that from the condition of our hair. That one time you cheated on your hairdresser? Yes, they can see that. And that you’ve been doing it yourself with cheap hair dye from Kruidvat, they pick up on that pretty quickly too. There’s also something else they can deduce from your hair, and that’s something you might not even know yourself.

You will hardly believe it: your hairdresser can see that you are pregnant. This is not a little tale that I initially thought myself. It is seriously true. When I asked my hairdresser, I immediately got a resounding ‘yes, of course’.

How can they tell? From the texture of your hair. If you're pregnant, your hair can become thicker, but it can also become thinner. An experienced hairdresser who has been working with your hairstyle for a while can notice this as a sign that a little one might be on the way.

All those hormonal changes that a mommy-to-be experiences play a role here. Pregnancy hormones have an effect on sebum production, which can cause your hair to suddenly become much greasier or drier. Your hair might also react differently to certain treatments. For example, if you're in foils and the color still hasn't set properly after an hour, that could be a subtle hint towards a baby.

But no worries: the hairdresser may suspect it, but the chance is small that they will actually bring it up. It's called a bit of respect. It would be quite something if someone casually told you that you were pregnant without you even knowing it yourself.
