Safe sunbathing in 8 crucial tips

What is true about what Doutzen says?

By

There was again some commotion in Insta-land. Doutzen had posted beautiful photos of her family and also hid a photo in her slides of a bottle from a brand that claims you can't get skin cancer from the sun. A bit debatable and dangerous. Because the fact is that we need vitamin D, for sure, but that the sun is also dangerous, so protection is necessary. Skin cancer can indeed arise from sun exposure. And you also get wrinkles and pigmentation spots from it. That's why we knocked on the door of skin therapist Annelijn van Ierland from Skin clinic. Because can we sunbathe and if so, how?

Why is sun protection important?
The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) rays, particularly UVA and UVB rays, which penetrate the atmosphere and reach our skin. Prolonged exposure to these UV rays can lead to harmful effects, such as premature skin aging, pigmentation spots, wrinkles, skin burns, and even skin cancer.

Fact: The more often you get burned, the greater the chance of skin cancer later in life. So make sure to apply sunscreen to your children well!

Tips

1. Always apply generously (about the size of a golf ball for body and face) with SPF 30 or higher. Do this before going outside and repeat for optimal protection.

2. Apply every two hours.

3. Wear UV-protective clothing while swimming, playing, or exercising outdoors.

4. Get out of the sun! Try to seek shade during the hours when the sun is the brightest, between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. This reduces exposure to intense UV radiation.

5. Wear a hat or cap and don't forget your sunglasses to protect your eyes and the skin around your eyes.

6. Protect extra against reflection: keep in mind that water and sand can reflect sunlight and increase exposure to UV radiation.

7. Don't forget your lips! Use a lip balm with SPF.

8. Has your skin already suffered sun damage? Then fortunately, you can still do something about it. Peels and laser treatments can significantly reduce sun damage, skin aging, pigmentation spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. At Skin clinic, the Youlaser MT is regularly used for this.
