Netflix, we need to talk

By
Netflix

My favorite streaming service and I are going through a rough time. We're not getting along so well. And I can honestly tell you that it's all Netflix's fault and that I absolutely refuse to take even a little bit of the blame myself.

Netflix was going to tackle password sharing ; they announced it a long time ago. And I get it: they obviously don't want non-paying viewers, and that's logical. But this measure and how it has now been implemented seriously makes me doubt whether I should just cancel my subscription.

Here's the thing: I don't share any passwords at all, but I have our ‘own’ family subscription with two friends. So we all pay nicely per month and have our own profile on the Netflix account. And now that's suddenly not allowed anymore. Well, sorry, but what the heck is that about?

Netflix wants to make it possible that only people at one address can do this. In this case, that's just me and my cat, and the latter doesn't contribute to the rent and monthly expenses, so that means I now have to take out a new subscription (and thus end up paying almost twice as much), while I was being very good with this family subscription. But not at one address, so now Netflix is coming after me.

So Netflix, I understand that you need to tackle this problem, really, but this way doesn't seem the smartest, because I bet there are more people in my situation. Who also live alone, for example, and have this arrangement with friends, and who now also have to take out a new, and much more expensive, subscription because Netflix decides to go after people who are doing something you haven't made yourself guilty of.

It feels a bit like the whole class has to stay after school because one student threw a paper ball. Super annoying and unfair. Netflix, what are we going to do about this?
