Shower Sandwiching: the hit on TikTok that saves your skin from the dry winter months

Do all members of the ‘it's-winter-so-my-skin-is-cork-dry’ club please pay attention? TikTok has found the solution for that annoying, itchy, and tight feeling of dry skin that many people are unfortunately experiencing right now. For me, it's a cycle I can't seem to escape: my solution to the cold is to take a wonderfully long, fiery hot shower every day, resulting in my skin becoming even drier. You can understand my enthusiasm when I saw a new skincare hack that should ensure hydrated skin, without having to give up my warm shower. The hack has the special name: shower sandwiching and it sounds, in my opinion, a bit too good to be true, but is it really?

Shower sandwiching ensures that your skin retains as much hydration as possible by applying an oil or moisturizing cream before and after showering. The reason we get dry skin after showering is mainly because hot water strips our skin of natural oils that provide a protective layer on our skin. By applying an oil about thirty minutes before you shower, you protect your skin against this. The oil then creates a protective barrier between the water and your skin. By also using an oil or a moisturizing cream on slightly damp skin after showering, you ensure extra hydration throughout the day.

It takes a bit of effort, but then you get something in return. With shower sandwiching, you would protect your natural skin barrier, give your skin some well-deserved extra hydration, and the feeling of tight, dry skin stays away while you can still take a hot shower. What more could you want?

@mindbodygreen Have you ever applied body oil before (in addition to after) the shower? 🚿 Hot water has the ability to rob your complexion of moisture, and providing an oily barrier can keep those healthy lipids intact. If your skin feels scaly right now, try #showersandwiching #mindbodygreen #shower #showeraesthetic #moisturesandwich ♬ Chill Vibes – Tollan Kim
