two often forgotten characteristics of ADHD

Often forgotten characteristics of ADHD

I feel like there has been much more attention for ADHD lately. And that's a good thing, because it is often still quite misunderstood. On my social media, from Instagram to LinkedIn, I see many posts from adults who have finally received the ‘diagnosis’ of ADHD and find it a real relief.

Because ADHD is a lot more complex than many thought. In the past, someone quickly received the label ‘ADHD’ if they couldn't sit still and were very high in their energy. That can certainly be a characteristic of ADHD, but there are so many other characteristics that can indicate it. According to psychologists, two important characteristics are often overlooked and/or not linked by people's surroundings to ADHD. Which ones are they?

1. Hyperfocus
‘Huh, how can that person have ADHD? He/She is so focused on things. With ADHD, you can't concentrate, right?’ Yep, this can actually indicate ADHD. For younger children, it can lead to irritation or even anger when they are taken out of that focus. People often link this to a form of autism, but that is certainly not always the case.

2. The strong tendency to finish everything
And thus not being able to start something else before your other task is finished. Often they are already mentally engaged with the next task, which can make it seem like it is being rushed, but that doesn't have to be the case. This characteristic can also occur in people with an anxiety disorder, or a combination of that with ADHD.
