The Bodyguard is the ultimate girls' night out

And this is why

The Bodyguard musical

The Bodyguard, Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman; these are all movies that colored my youth with lines and scenes that you occasionally pull out of the closet and that everyone, at least peers, immediately recognizes. The Bodyguard remained craving for more and thus a musical was born. And that, dear people, is now running again in the Beatrix Theater and it is fantastic. This is the musical you must see with a group of girlfriends and this is why.

1. Singing the songs on the way
Nice together in the car and blasting the The Bodyguard playlist on Spotify. I’ve got the stuff that you want, I will always love you, I want to dance with somebody, I’m every woman, run to you; you really know every song and one is even better than the other. If a car is bouncing down the A2 towards Utrecht, it’s people on their way to the Beatrix Theater in Utrecht.

2. Nyassa Alberta as Whitney
I love Nyassa. That’s why I’ve seen her about four times as Tina Turner, but if anyone can handle the role of Whitney vocally, it’s her. And she is Beyoncé-level gorgeous with all her outfits and wigs.

3. The dances and the dancers
You bounce in your seat too, because during The Bodyguard you are also treated to a concert and a performance. What I also found delightful is that all the songs are sung in English. A translation is not needed here because it’s about the work of this singer and these songs are her songs. Although I can sometimes really enjoy a beautiful translation and adaptation, I found it very nice here to listen to the songs in their original form.

4. Tarikh Janssen
The only downside to the original The Bodyguard film, I’m sorry fans, was Kevin Costner. He’s not exactly the person who would make my skirt drop spontaneously, shall I say. Tarikh, on the other hand… I understand that choice. His muscles are practically bursting through his shirt, his calmness makes him extra attractive, and he’s also funny. That makes the girls' outing just a bit juicier.

5. Nurlaila, the sister of the lead actress
I don’t remember this part of the film very well, but I thought it was a beautiful storyline. The non-famous sister who can also sing beautifully and is jealous of the sister who seemingly has it all. Nurlaila performs this role so exceptionally well. And this storyline provides conversation material when you go for cocktails afterwards.

6. The tension
The Bodyguard is really, really thrilling. Beforehand, it is warned that at a certain moment police officers will come into the audience and that you shouldn’t be too shocked by that, but because of that, I was always on the edge of my seat. It’s Hitchcockian suspense: you know something exciting is going to happen and that gives every scene even more weight.

7. The outfits
I said: Beyoncé-worthy. And kudos for the quick costume changes of Nyassa.

8. Utrecht
The Beatrix Theater is super easy to reach by car and by train. After (or before the performance) you can enjoy one of these wine bars. Because believe me: after The Bodyguard you won’t want to go home for a while.
