All the things we as millennials want back

Things we as Millennials miss

Let's be honest: the millennials among us haven't had it easy. I can know this because I am one, with my birth year dating back to 1993. So I know all about Limewire irritations, way too thin eyebrows, and questionable fashion choices à la Paul Frank and Björn Borg. Still, there are also a few things I am sure other millennials secretly want back. Here they come:

Hyves
Remember scratching, sending tikkies, and the dancing bananas? Hyves was once our only social media platform, and now, years later, it unfortunately feels like a very vague dream that I would love to relive someday.

MSN
The feeling of logging into MSN after school to see who of your friends (or maybe even your crush of the week) was online is something I have never found again. I literally couldn't wait to sit behind the only fixed computer in the house and discuss all the gossip of the day with the friends I had seen just a quarter of an hour before. And if you weren't online for a bit? Then your friends were out of luck: blissfully quiet!

Phones with prepaid credit
Okay, it was indeed incredibly annoying that you had to run to the supermarket every now and then because your credit was gone, but not having any credit did mean that you were sometimes completely unreachable. A case of ‘don't call me’, literally.

Snake
Well, what were you supposed to do if you had no credit but wanted to play on your phone? You opened Snake and could entertain yourself for hours with this absurdly addictive game. I say hours on purpose because the battery of your Nokia 3310 could last for days. Those were the days.

MTV series like Laguna Beach and The Hills
I can't be the only one whose entire personality, vocabulary, and fashion style from 2004 to 2010 was completely based on the main characters of these two shows. Everything Lauren Conrad had, I had to have too. Not that this worked with my allowance of sixty euros a month, but I always tried to find cheaper alternatives with the help of all the fashion blogs that were hot at that time. Shows with so much impact on our style simply don't exist anymore, but I still watch them regularly and with much love.

School parties
Another feeling I haven't had in years: the excitement that came with the school party of the year. Because would your crush be there? And would you dance together to ‘Let Me Love You’ by Mario? Would you manage to sneak a few Flügels inside, and who had the best outfit on? All of this was, of course, extensively discussed on MSN the next day, and then you would avoid your homework by playing a round of Snake. Those were the days.

Idols
Sure, nowadays we are drowning in talent shows, but do you remember the first two seasons of Idols? The excitement you felt every Saturday night as you sat with a bowl of chips and a glass of cola next to your parents watching whether your favorite contestant made it to the next round, the posters of Jim or Jamai (I was die-hard team Jamai) in your window, and the people lining up for a big balcony hoping to catch a glimpse of these two rising pop stars. No matter how hard the TV channels of today try, it will never be like it was back then.

The time
I wrote it once before: time seemed to go a lot slower back then than it does now. Aside from all the scientifically backed arguments about why this is so, I would really like to go back to the time of endless summers, weekends that sometimes seemed to last five days, and what about those incredibly long school vacations? Sign me up!
