Wow: this is how many calories you burn during a day of shopping

Exercising without actually setting foot in the gym? Count me in. I'm just not a fanatical athlete. I never have been, and I guess I won't become one either. To stay somewhat in shape, I really have to rely on other activities. And spending a day shopping just happens to be the ultimate calorie burner.

We all know: wandering around the entire Bijenkorf only to still be in that overheated Zara searching through all the piles of clothing takes a lot of energy from a person. Moreover, your step counter is working overtime, and those imaginary dumbbells in your hands (or rather all the bags) add to that. So it's quite a workout: you burn five calories per minute. A shopping session lasts an average of five hours, so you end up burning a good 1500 calories. All the more reason to dive into the city a bit more often.

And not just that. Grocery shopping is also a good cardio exercise, as strolling behind your cart for an hour equals about 130 calories. That's a nice bonus. Walking down all those aisles only to have to go all the way back to the start because you forgot a head of lettuce isn't so bad after all. Or what about gardening? Trimming the hedge, mowing the lawn, throwing thousands of leaves in the green bin, picking weeds; it's quite a job. Fun? Far from it. But still, after an hour of toiling and hauling, you can say goodbye to 360 calories. You'd almost feel like doing it.

Summary: it's not such a disaster to skip the gym once in a while. Your body burns enough without you even realizing it, although this varies for each body. These numbers are just an average. Plus: these ‘non-workouts’ are of course not intensive exercises, you definitely won't get a firmer butt from them. If only it were that easy.
