All the reasons why you want to go to the Barbie movie now

By

Last Tuesday it finally happened: I got to attend the premiere of Barbie The Movie at the Tuschinski Theater in Amsterdam, where all my Barbie dreams came true. The entire theater was transformed into a real Barbieland with pink drinks, lifelike Barbies, and a pink carpet that famous Dutch people shone on. Of course, I wore the prettiest pink dress I could find (any excuse to shop is a good one) and thoroughly enjoyed the glitter and glamour that the evening brought. And the movie? Yes, it was fantastic.

First of all, I want to talk about Ryan Gosling as Ken. Can everyone who thought this was a really weird idea please stand up and leave the room? Because this man is brilliant. He is perfectly in his role: all the times I laughed out loud were because of him. His character touches on a slightly sensitive topic halfway through the film that I won’t say too much about, but I will reveal one thing: it is very relevant to today. I really wouldn’t know who could have done this better; thanks to Ryan Gosling, the ‘kenergy’ radiates off the screen.

And how could it be any different with Margot Robbie by your side as Barbie? I really don’t understand why her photo isn’t next to ‘perfection’ in the dictionary. Margot plays ‘stereotypical Barbie’, the doll you immediately think of when someone says the word ‘Barbie’. She lives in a dreamhouse that we all used to have in our attics, has an enviable wardrobe, and always perfectly styled hair. Until she leaves Barbieland for the real world, where she faces quite a few challenges and discovers that the real world unfortunately cannot be viewed through rose-colored glasses.

Anyway, enough spoilers. Take it from me: you just have to go here. Even if it’s just for the cast: with delightful supporting roles for America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, and Rhea Perlman (who you probably know from Mathilda) and cameos from John Cena and Dua Lipa, you will definitely leave the theater with a big smile. Barbie The Movie is truly girl power on steroids, with a surprising ending that I didn’t see coming…
