Is the hair theory trend real?

Another day, another trend. This time it's the turn of the ‘hair theory’, which is currently all over TikTok. In the videos, women show different hairstyles on themselves to demonstrate that each hairstyle gives a certain impression. This in turn influences how others see and treat you. For example, a tight bun might come across as more professional, while a hair clip makes you seem a bit more creative. Do you prefer to wear your hair down? Then you appear more confident and ‘effortless’.

The ‘pigtail theory’ is the instigator of the ‘hair theory’ trend. Waitresses noticed that by wearing two braids, they received much more tips during their shift. And I'm not talking about a few dollars, but hundreds of dollars more. This shows that a certain hairstyle indeed has an impact on how others treat you. But that it had to be the case with pigtails is just so typical. In the video, Bella Woodard also says: ‘I’m just gonna say that it’s so gross and weird, but I’m down for more tips’. She’s absolutely right.

Whether there is theoretical research behind it is not the case. After all, it remains just a trend circulating on TikTok, but you can't really call it a true theory. Nevertheless, many people are somewhat inspired by the trend, as this way you can more easily find a hairstyle that best fits your desired impression. Do you want to come across as more professional during that one important meeting? Then try putting your hair in a tight ponytail for a change.
