Anyone who knows me knows that I am crazy about a good staycation. Don't get me wrong: I am also a big fan of flying to a far, tropical destination to relax for a few weeks, but a night away in my own country has a charm that I cannot resist. Moreover, I find a night away in my own city even more enjoyable, so when I was invited to spend the night at Hotel Haarhuis in Arnhem, I, as a true Arnhem girl, of course, could not refuse.

The Arnhem hotel, which has been around since 1918, received a fifth star last month. This had to be celebrated properly, as this makes Hotel Haarhuis the only five-star hotel in the region. The hotel has undergone a significant makeover recently, with designer Will Erens drawing inspiration from the 1920s and elements from other time periods. The fifth star was festively unveiled with performances by real flapper girls, a chicly decorated party room, cocktails in abundance, and live music in the hotel's wine cellar, where beautiful old wine barrels are located and where original tiles from the hotel still lie.

There was also plenty of time to explore the rest of the hotel, which features a gym, a CitySpa where you can look over the city from the sauna at a few meters high, and restaurant Locals (which recently received a second listing in the Gault & Millau guide). Next to the hotel, you will find coffee bar Hoek, where they, in my opinion, make the best macarons in the country, and on top of the hotel is rooftop bar Blou, where you can enjoy delicious snacks and cocktails with a view over the center of Arnhem.

So there is plenty to do. And even though I am of course a bit biased when it comes to things to do in my own city, it is truly worth spending a night there to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. Besides all these lovely amenities, the rooms are also delightful, with a bed you never want to get out of and bathrobes you never want to take off. In short: a big tip!
