Flat tits from Brabant delicacy

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: 6 x lesser-known local delicacies you want to try now.

In our entire country, there are wonderful regional products to be found. The sausage roll, the Bossche bol and the Zeeuwse bolus we all know, but there is so much more to discover. Step off the beaten path and taste a local product that you don't know yet. We gathered 6 lesser-known local delicacies that are truly worth trying.

Flat tits
Flat tits are a delicacy from Brabant, from Bergen op Zoom to be precise. They are also called cow pies, joskes, or Groffenkoeken. The last name is the most commonly used; the large cookies filled with pastry cream were once a failed experiment by baker Groffen, but because they are so popular (his son still sells about 7,000 of them per week!) they remain a tasty part of the assortment. They are available in various colors of icing, from chocolate brown to bright blue.

Nonnevot
In Limburg, you naturally order a piece of Limburgse vlaai. And you eat a plate of zoervleis. Whatever you want to taste: nonnevot. Not as well-known as the vlaaien and zoervleis perhaps, but incredibly delicious. It is a pastry in the shape of a loop with a loose knot on top. What does it taste like? A bit like a donut. Some bakers bake it, others choose to fry it. Limburgers mainly eat it during carnival. A bit different than a bitter garnish with your beer.

Fladderak
With Fladderak, the people of Groningen go fladdering. This is a strong drink with 25 percent alcohol. A kind of brandy that tastes like lemon and cinnamon. You can really only find Fladderak in Groningen. It is made there by distillery Hooghoudt (in the city of Groningen) and by the Groninger Genever Stokerij in Oostwold. Try it once when you're in the north. Tasty with a piece of poffert, a Groninger delicacy that, in our opinion, deserves a bit more recognition.

Spakenburgs heart
Planning a day in Utrecht? Go a bit further up in the province. To Spakenburg to be precise. There you can eat the Spakenburgs Hart: the local delicacy that makes the heart of every Spakenburger beat faster. It is a flat cake that you can bend a little. They are known for their cheerful decorations. Many bakers put heartwarming texts on them, so you can perfectly give it as a gift to someone. With that, you really give away a piece of your heart. *melts*

Delfts bridge
If you like sugar bread, then you will also love the Delfts Bruggetje. This Delft sweet is actually sugar bread filled with dried apricots, pieces of hazelnut, and pieces of candy. You can get it at Stadsbakkerij De Diamanten Ring. It has been baked there for centuries (yes, really) according to the same family recipe. You can't get more traditional than that.

Nimweegs nuilertje
‘Stop with nuile and buy a sexke snol’, the Nijmegen people also say to each other. In other words: stop whining and buy a bag of candy. What do they buy then? Nimweegse nuilertjes! Salty, gelatin-free licorice sold in funky tins. The creators of this licorice found inspiration in the character of a typical Nijmegen resident: at first glance quite grumpy, but with a heart of gold. Do you taste it back?
