Are we really grumpier when it's a full moon?

Everyone thinks something of it, this full moon. ‘Oh, I sleep so badly then.’ ‘I feel so restless.’ But is it really true? Are we really moodier at the full moon, and grumpier? Or are we just adjusting?
Since time immemorial, the full moon has been associated with all kinds of legends, myths and rituals. In some cultures, the full moon is seen as a time of spiritual enlightenment, while in others it is associated with fear and doom. But what does science say about it? Well, very little, it turns out.
Despite many anecdotal claims about the influence of the full moon on our mood, there is little scientific evidence to support these claims. Several studies have tried to find a link between the phases of the moon and human behaviour, but the results are inconsistent and inconclusive.
One of the best-known studies, conducted at the University of Basel in Switzerland, examined the sleep quality and sleep duration of more than 30 volunteers during different lunar cycles. The researchers found no significant difference in sleep behaviour between the different phases of the moon. So: we do not sleep worse during the full moon, say researchers. Although you may still experience it that way yourself.
And how we feel mentally? Although there is little scientific evidence of the full moon's influence on our mood, belief in this powerful cosmic force remains quite strong. For some, the full moon offers a sense of connection with the universe, while others feel anxious or restless during this period. Everyone feels something. Connection. Energy. That idea.
And so then the funny thing is: it is possible that the belief in the power of the full moon on our mood is a self-fulfilling prophecy. People who believe the full moon affects their behaviour may be subconsciously preparing themselves for changes in their mood during this period.
