Even in this cute LEGO movie, it's about Diddy

Anyone who, like me, grew up in the 00s is guaranteed to feel nostalgic about songs like ’Slave 4 U‘ and ’Hollaback Girl‘. Those tracks are just two examples of the huge hits from that time (this sounds like grandma talking again), but both were made by Pharrell Williams. There isn't a summer that goes by without me playing ’Beautiful‘ by Snoop Dogg and Pharrell; they are just those classics that will always remain good. Pharrell is quite a small, thin guy with a high voice, especially when you compare him to the artists he collaborates with. For example, I also think of Jay-Z, and the artist with whom he produced some of his biggest hits: Diddy.

Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg are so cute

The idea of telling Pharrell's life story in Lego is unique; it's something different than seeing actors who just don't look like the real artists and dramatically telling a story while the main character in real life probably dealt with those kinds of situations in a much calmer way. In this film, the biggest artists Pharrell collaborated with also get to speak, but: all as LEGO figures! I could never have imagined saying that I find Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg cute, but you just can't help it. Yet, there is a notable absence in the film: Diddy. Because the collaboration with Diddy was one of the most successful.

Is he cut out or left out?

Nothing is said about Diddy at all. In another film (which also happens to be called ‘Piece By Piece’, released in 2008) about his good friend fashion designer André Leon Talley, Diddy initially did participate. Afterwards, he decided to cut all his interviews from the film. Quite rude. But he probably never participated in this LEGO film. They have been working on the production since 2019, and there were already rumors in the music industry about Diddy's bizarre behavior at that time. So it wouldn't be strange if Pharrell consciously chose to leave Diddy out of his life story. But that doesn't prevent the fact that around the promotion of the film, there is again a lot about Diddy. Especially since the entire collaboration is actually completely ignored. You be the judge: the film is now playing in theaters.
