Expedition aftertalk: I had missed this bromance

Episode 5

We are only on day 9, but it is starting to get busy on Titan Island. Justine arrives in a frenzy, and that is quite a switch from the serene mood that the men had created. Justine certainly doesn't need a drink to turn it into a party. For Thomas and Kiran, it has become somewhat hopeless; they don't know when they can return to the ‘normal’ expedition. While Justine tells them how dirty Ouassima played the game, she suddenly feels guilty towards Justine at Camp North, but it is not very credible. It seems that she is trying to save her own skin so that people will trust her again when she wants to form an alliance.

At Camp South, the flint has been missing for a day. No food, then. Despite having caught oysters, no one wants to take the risk of eating them raw. I think that’s wise, because it seems quite dreadful to be on a deserted island and then get extreme food poisoning. I would roll crying over the beach. Fortunately, we see a bit more of survival on the island in this episode. They manage to knock a coconut out of the tree and share the juice by drinking from a large shell. It almost seems like a kind of pre-game ritual. Hamza thinks it’s ‘too bad’ that he lost the flint.

Fortunately, the long trial moment begins soon. And Sergio finally gets to participate! What would make me very angry is Art doing a live report of what is happening at that moment: ‘Yes, yes, yes, I know I let that puzzle piece slip from my hands, give me a break!’ Despite the irritation towards Timor, Camp South loses. They will therefore go to the island council. Meanwhile, Sergio, despite being in the winning Camp, has a small panic attack because he has participated in the trial, and that is tradition.

We still get to watch our favorite men on Titan Island, where it is time for the final battle of the titans. Finally, there seems to be some sort of end in sight for Thomas and Kiran. It is not entirely clear to me whether the women will then be left to their fate, and whether Titan Island will then be renamed Losers Island, but we will worry about that later. My favorite titan Kiran wins, and thus the moment of choosing has arrived. Thomas previously chose a fish trap and a harpoon to take back to the island for a strong comeback. Kiran has a raft. I understand that choice a bit less, and I am quite curious about what prizes are now on offer. Will Kiran make a logical choice this time, for something that clearly has a certain function? No, he does not. He chooses the hourglass, even though we do not know what you can do with it. Escaping to the Netherlands on the raft while keeping track of how long the journey takes with the help of the hourglass does not seem realistic to me, but who knows.

Ellemieke and Ouassima turn out to be very good friends. Maybe I missed that because we get so extremely little of life on the island. At the island council, it becomes extremely dramatic when it becomes clear that Hamza has to leave: he and Billy fall into each other's arms crying, telling each other how much they love each other, and when Hamza hears that he can return to the fight at a later time, he tells the camera that he does it for Billy. After this dramatic exit, I look even more forward to the heroic comeback of Thomas and Kiran next week.
