These 50’s & 60’s film classics are a must-see

TV, series, reality, documentaries, I basically watch everything that my friends or sisters say is fantastic, or ‘you have to see this’, even though I actually don't want to watch it anymore when someone says I have to see it. But then it’s always about the latest series and the newest shows. It’s time for us to go back to the basics, the real classics. The black-and-white films and the big stars of the 50s and 60s. Audrey Hepburn is the Beyoncé of the 50s and 60s, and it’s time that more people realize that. But don’t forget Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Grace Kelly! These are the film classics that you really must see.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s is really at the top of the list. This is my all-time favorite. It’s a love story but one with a woman who is far too independent, and this also makes the film funny. The film was released in 1961 and is based on the novella of the same name by Truman Capote. ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ is praised as an iconic film of the 60s, with Audrey Hepburn in the lead role as Holly Golightly.

Roman Holiday (1953) is also a romcom with Audrey Hepburn in the lead role. The film is about a European princess, Ann (played by Audrey), who secretly escapes from her stifling royal life during a diplomatic trip to Rome. She meets American journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), who discovers her identity while she thinks she is anonymous in the big city. He plans to sell this story including photos to the newspapers, but then love comes around the corner... This was really Audrey’s first big breakthrough. She also won the Oscar for Best Actress with this.

Some Like It Hot (1959) is one of the big successes of Marilyn Monroe. She cannot be missed when it comes to iconic 50s and 60s films! The story revolves around two musicians who dress as women to escape the mafia and join a female band. According to critics, Marilyn is very funny and of course, she looks fantastic in every scene.

If you feel like watching a handsome man, you should Rebel Without a Cause (1955) turn on. I won’t waste too many words on it: a rebellious James Dean. This film made a big impact on youth at that time; they suddenly felt recognized and understood, and because of that, James Dean became an unforgettable superstar.

‘I try to be like Grace Kelly’, Mika sang for a reason. The most popular and iconic film of Grace Kelly is ‘Rear Window‘ (1954), directed by Alfred Hitchcock. In this thrilling thriller, Grace Kelly plays the role of Lisa Fremont. Lisa is in a relationship with a photographer who is confined to his home due to a broken leg. So he has nothing else to do but peek at the neighbors all day (life without Netflix). And then something terrible happens: someone seems to have been murdered, and maybe Lisa's boyfriend knows more, given all that peeking... This film is not only fantastic because Grace Kelly is in it, it is also considered one of the best films by the famous director Hitchcock. I know what I’m going to do this week: watch as many of these films again as possible.
