Forget Ibiza and Saint-Tropez

These are the travel destinations of 2025

Have you booked your first trip of the new year yet? I certainly haven't, but that's exactly why suggestions are always welcome. With so many places to discover, it's hard to make a choice. Fortunately, travel experts have already done some groundwork, so we really only have to book (and pack, of course). These destinations will be the place to be next year.

Thailand

Thailand has been popular among backpackers for years, but experts expect that popularity to only increase next year. The reason: the new season of ‘The White Lotus’. The first two seasons were filmed in Hawaii and Sicily, and those destinations ended up on a whole lot of travel bucket lists. There's a good chance that this will also happen with Thailand. Where exactly should you be? The recordings took place in Koh Samui, Phuket and Bangkok. The new season starts in February, so if you want to beat the crowds, it's best to book as soon as possible. If you don't care about the series at all, Thailand is still worth it according to travel expert Adam Duckworth. “The Southeast Asian country is known for its beautiful beaches, stunning architecture, and glamorous resorts.” And what about a real Thai massage?.

Orlando (United States)

Anyone who loves theme parks: Orlando is the destination you definitely shouldn't miss. The city was already known for Universal Studios, but in May 2025, Universal's Epic Universe will be added. This enormous park will have five different themed areas, including Super Nintendo and Harry Potter. But even if just the thought of roller coasters gives you weak knees, Orlando should be on your list. The city is not nicknamed ‘The City Beautiful’ for nothing. With about an hour's drive, you can reach the east coast of Florida, where you can enjoy a beach day. And for all the foodies among us: Orlando was the food city of the US in 2023, delicious.

Italy

For me, Italy is always at the top of the list, but that will now be the case for more people. 2025 is a Jubilee Year, a holy year for Rome, Vatican City and actually the whole country. From Christmas 2024 until Epiphany 2026, there will be various celebrations and pilgrims will come to the capital for a deeper connection with their faith. For those who want to participate in the activities or want to avoid the crowds, it's wise to plan your trip well. Also because many hotels will fill up quickly. For atmosphere and spiritual experiences, we need to be in Italy next year.

Japan

Although Japan has been popular for a long time, but that increased even more last year. And experts believe that will also be the case in 2025. One of the reasons is the exchange rate in the country. Without making it too complicated: in 2019 you got 120 Japanese yen for 1 euro, and now that's 169. Simply put: our money is worth more, and your trip will therefore be a lot cheaper. If you've always wanted to enjoy Japanese culture and cuisine, now is your moment. An extra tip: in spring, all the cherry blossoms bloom, and they are truly beautiful.

Kenya

According to travel expert Jonathan Alder, we should go to Kenya for a unique safari. The entire Big Five lives in this African country, and with a bit of luck, you can spot them. For the ultimate experience, it's best to go around July or August. During this time, the Great Migration takes place. A journey where herds of wildebeests and zebras cross the Mara River in search of fresh grass and to escape the drought. With the right timing, you'll be surrounded by wild animals and feel like you're really in ‘The Lion King’. That's quite a dream.

New Zealand

For those looking for something further away, New Zealand is the recommendation. According to Alder, there is something for everyone here. “This beautiful country Down Under is a paradise for adventurers and lovers of food, wine, and hiking. It's an ideal destination to spend at least two weeks exploring various regions and breathtaking landscapes.” And film lovers like me can really indulge here. Various films, such as ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’, were filmed here, and many of those locations can also be visited. You probably won't get closer to those fantasy worlds.

Scotland

Fortunately, you don't necessarily have to go to the other side of the world to find a unique destination. Scotland is known for its breathtaking cliffs and ancient castles. The island group the Outer Hebrides has even been named by National Geographic as one of the best places for an unforgettable travel experience. Besides being very beautiful, there will also be plenty to do next year. For example, the city of Glasgow is celebrating its 850th anniversary with various festivities. And for sports enthusiasts: the Orkney 2025 International Island Games will be held in July. Island groups from all over the world will compete against each other in various sports. One last plus point: it doesn't get as hot there in the summer as it does in France, for example. That's a lot less sweating.

The South Pole

Personally, I'm a bit more into warm destinations, but I can imagine this will be a mega unique trip. According to Alder, the popularity is also related to global warming, a case of ‘while it still can’. A bit sad, though. But if you're heading that way, you should go to South Georgia Island and the Falklands. There, you have the best chance of coming face to face with penguins. How cute is that?
