Forget Valencia, this undiscovered Spanish spot has been declared a hidden gem

We all have that one destination where we experience that ultimate vacation feeling. Some have it with Italy, others with Greece. Mine is undoubtedly Spain, but I have a strong suspicion that I share this opinion with many others. There are more Dutch people than Spaniards walking around there in the summer for a reason. Are you coming for your peace and would you rather mingle with the locals instead of hordes of tourists? Then Villajoyosa is where you want to go in España from now on.

This Spanish town, located in the province of Alicante and about an hour and a half drive from Valencia, has been declared the best hidden gem in Europe. European Best Destinations came out with this statement because Villajoyosa contains all the ingredients for the perfect sun holiday according to them.
The destination in question is located on the coast and has about 3.5 kilometers of beach with a width of almost 100 meters. So you don't have to squeeze yourself and your towel anywhere. This is of course ideal in the busy summer months, but the advantage of the Costa Blanca is that you can still enjoy 25 degrees and sun even in October.

While on one side you have a deep blue sea, on the other side you have their real business card: a composition of colorful fishermen's houses next to each other. Each a different color, so that the fishermen could spot their own house from the sea in the past.

You don't really have much more than sun, sea, beach and sangria by the way. You really have to come here if you love a sun holiday, and not a sporty holiday. Do you still want to do something cultural during your trip? Then you can still admire the authentic walls (dating from the Renaissance), there are still various lookout towers intact that were used in the seventeenth century, or you can visit the chocolate factory. Because that is what Villajoyosa is known for: chocolate. They have a museum, but also a shop (even more important) where you can eat yourself sick on churros con chocolate. Delicious.
