‘Gordon is called empty and loveless: since when is being single pathetic?’

The reactions to Gordon's real life soap are not bad. An empty, loveless, pointless, and pathetic life. But I see something very different.

Of course I watch Gordon's real life soap. If only to give him that one extra viewer, because I have a soft spot for this big-mouthed, small-hearted singer. But my experience is somewhat different from that of the TV critic.

I completely understand that some people drop out after a few episodes. It shows Gordon as he is, and that is not very different from the image we all already have of him. And for someone like Gordon, there are very few dramas: no heated arguments with the Toppers, no new loves that ultimately turn out not to be the one. He swears and grumbles a bit, but that’s about it. And okay, he criticizes more easily than he takes it. But we all have our flaws, right?

But I also hear judgments like loveless and empty passing by. But I see love. I see Patrick, Gordon's life partner for years. Maybe not in a romantic sense, but clearly with a lot of mutual love. I see two little dogs that adore him (I always consider that a plus in a person), I see friends, I see Gordon starting a new restaurant. In short, a single hospitality entrepreneur, who works hard, parties hard, and has nice people around him.

I hear critics say: he comes home to an empty house after every party. Well, that’s just the life of a single. That doesn’t have to be a bad thing at all. Since when is a partner the absolute highest achievable? As if a single life can’t be beautiful or fulfilling. Of course, Gordon has been very ‘in search’ and maybe still is. But instead of burning him for that, a little empathy wouldn’t hurt us.

It seems that Gordon currently can’t do anything right. From the Netherlands' darling (with Geer or Replay) he has suddenly become an easy target for all those people on TV who know better. Let’s hope the tide turns for him soon. Because why would we begrudge someone their happiness?
