You know how it goes: you book a destination because it looks really nice in the photos. You daydream on Instagram. On TikTok, you see yourself walking in all those cute and cool places. And then, in real life, it’s not that nice at all. Sometimes a city trip or vacation can be quite disappointing, and it’s better to know in advance where you especially should not fall for.

The biggest seducer of them all is Venice. It seems like the ultimate dream to go there, but appearances can be deceiving. Venice, the city of canals, gondolas, and romance, has a lasting appeal to travelers from all over the world. But behind the enchanting facades and historical charm lies a reality that some experience as a significant disappointment. Although Venice looks like a dream come true on postcards, visitors often face disappointments. Just think of the mountains of street waste, to name just one. Gondolas that are overcrowded and unaffordable.

But there’s something you never see in the photos of Venice, but which will undoubtedly hinder your visit: the crowds. One of the most striking problems Venice faces is the overwhelming number of tourists that flood the city daily. Especially during the high season, the historic center can become clogged with people, making it difficult to admire the iconic sights. You also need a ticket if you want to go in now. The narrow streets and small squares can sometimes get so busy that you can’t get through. Well, hey, don’t call me. You’re not doing that for fun, are you?

Mass tourism has also led to a rise in costs in Venice. Hotels, restaurants, and shops in the city center often charge higher prices, adjusted to the expectations of tourists willing to pay for the ‘Venetian experience’. This can make it difficult for budget travelers to find affordable accommodation and meals, forcing them to stay or eat outside the center. And that’s definitely not fun, no.
