How long does an affair last on average?

Peeking at the neighbors, the grass on that infamous other side, that second love, the lust that calls. Cheating comes in all forms, but how long does that cheating actually last?

Because when it happens, how long does that affair actually last?

The average duration of an affair is quite short, research shows. Look, an affair is not just cheating. It is falling in love with someone else. And that infatuation phase lasts on average 6 to 18 months. In other words: after a year and a half, the fun of that new one is also over.

I know you well enough now
What remains is the infidelity and betrayal: your relationship has changed because you have had a double life for a long time. Can you go back to how it was? Affairs usually continue as long as both parties get what they want: secret lust, no burdens, but the sex. But: most affairs end after a year. Definitely after a year and a half. About 30 percent of affairs last longer than two years. It is easy to explain why this is so, from a psychological perspective: the novelty is then gone. And when the novelty is gone, it is no longer so interesting and we collectively return to our base at home. Because, well, those who cheat but do not break up the relationship do not want to lose that stable home either.

Yet experts say that some affairs last a lifetime: these are really those people with a double life. They are simply not happy enough with what they have and are always looking for more. I can't imagine it: happily married, that first of all, but above all a mother of three young children – I honestly wouldn't know where to find the energy to also flirt and mess around with someone else. And fortunately, my grass is very green. That helps too.
