A Game of Thrones movie is coming

While new ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off series are popping up everywhere, there is now also a movie in the making. Little is known about the story and the cast, although fans want just one thing: the return of their beloved characters. I don't like bringing bad news, but it seems unlikely that we will see the main characters from the series return in the movie.

Kit Harington doesn't want to know anything about spin-offs

For eight years, actor Kit Harington played the role of Jon Snow. He was one of the few who appeared in all seasons. When the show ended in 2019, Kit fell into quite a hole. “My heart breaks.” “I love this show more than anything else,” he said at the time. To this day, the topic of ‘Game of Thrones’ is sensitive for him. Watching the series himself is still not possible. “It took me a few years to get over it – I still don't know for sure if I've completely succeeded.” For a moment, it seemed that he would overcome his emotions and that a series would come specifically about his character. But that didn't happen; Kit just didn't feel good about it. And although the spin-off ‘House of the Dragon’ is a huge success, Kit wants nothing to do with it. “I just can't watch it. I wish them the best and I hear it's great, but I don't think I'll ever watch that show.” Actually, everything that reminds him of ‘Game of Thrones’ still hurts too much. So we shouldn't hope to see him in the movie either.

Also no Carice van Houten

Carice van Houten was the first Dutch person to appear in the series. For seven seasons, she played the priestess Melisandre. The role opened international doors and earned her an Emmy nomination. However, she doesn't look back on that time with completely good feelings. ”During ‘Game of Thrones’, I was a bit stagnant. I wasn't challenged, I didn't progress,” she told Volkskrant in 2021. It even went so far that Carice considered quitting acting altogether. “I wasn't feeling well, I wasn't in my element. At one point, I thought: I don't want this anymore, I'm going to retrain and do something else.” Fortunately (for us), she found her love for acting again in the film ‘Instinct’ by Halina Reijn. This negative memory will only ensure that we can forget about a return of Melisandre in the upcoming film.

What about Emilia Clarke?

Can we still speak of a spoiler after five years? Well, just a warning for those who haven't finished the series yet (and still want to). Daenerys Targaryen, the character played by Emilia Clarke, died in the last season. However, this was not the last we saw of her. She suddenly appeared in the second season of ‘House of the Dragon’. For those wondering: how is that possible? That story takes place before that of ‘Game of Thrones’. This time, it wasn't Emilia who played the role, but the English actress Imogen Ruby Little. This was also because the character was only briefly shown and not really in her face. Although Emilia looks back fondly on her time with the series, watching spin-offs is too much for her as well. “I am so satisfied and happy with my experience that I think it would be very strange to see the new series,” When she was asked if she would want to play her character again for the series about Jon Snow, she clearly answered: “No, I think I'm done.” That doesn't bode well for a possible return in the movie, although she may have changed her mind.
