Holiday

This country is just as beautiful as the Philippines, but a lot closer.

Yes, sigh: I could easily entertain myself for a week, you know. But yes. A bit too far to fly and a quarter turn too expensive. Dreaming is always allowed. But you can also find the Philippines closer to home, I have discovered.

The Philippines are globally known for their breathtaking beaches, crystal-clear waters, and exotic islands. For many travelers, it is the ultimate dream destination. But did you know there is a country much closer to home that offers the same natural beauty and adventure? Hi Croatia, a European gem that is just as enchanting as the Philippines, but only a few hours flight from the Netherlands. And that not only saves travel time but also a chunk of money on expensive tickets. Ha.

Croatia, located on the Adriatic Sea, is known for its beautiful coastline, which stretches over more than 1,700 kilometers and is dotted with over a thousand islands. Like the Philippines, Croatia offers a stunning combination of sun-soaked beaches, azure waters, and unspoiled nature. The charm of Croatia lies in its diversity – from charming, cozy towns to secluded bays. All calm and beautiful nature and also the vibrant city vibe, if you feel like it.

The Philippines are known for their million small islands, but Croatia can certainly compete here. Hvar, Brač, Korčula, and Vis are just a few of the many Croatian islands that are well worth a visit. Each island has its own unique character and offers something different to the traveler.

  • Hvar is famous for its vibrant nightlife, beautiful lavender fields, and luxury marinas. The chic Ibiza of Croatia, so to speak.
  • Brač has the iconic Zlatni Rat beach, which is often compared to the white sandy beaches of the Philippines. Insta-picture time.
  • Korčula, with its historic towns and vineyards, offers a more relaxed and culturally rich experience.
  • Vis, the most remote of the larger islands, offers tranquility, authentic villages, and a breathtaking underwater world. Dive gear on your back and go.

The hospitality of the Croatians reminds one of the warmth with which you are welcomed in the Philippines. Croatia is known for its friendly inhabitants and relaxed lifestyle. Additionally, the Croatian cuisine offers a Mediterranean feast of fresh seafood, olive oil, wine, and local delicacies such as pašticada (braised beef) and peka (a traditional dish cooked under an iron dome). You can snorkel, sunbathe, hang out on the beach, visit beach clubs, and explore old towns. Everything you also find far away, then. A golden tip, indeed. Do we still have vacation days left, right? I want to.
