Research shows that your vacation should last at least this long to fully relax.

How long do you need to be away to completely relax? To really unwind? It doesn't work that as soon as you arrive at your destination, you immediately switch into holiday mode. It takes some time. You still need to get your work out of your system and your head, you're tired from the journey, you're still worrying about whether everything is okay with the cat at home...
Vacation is essential for our mental and physical health, but how long do you need to be away to truly relax and experience the benefits of a break?
So when do you actually relax? Research shows that after eight days you reach the highest peak in your relaxation. You could say that a vacation should therefore last at least eight days. From the fourth day, you usually notice a significant decrease in stress levels and start enjoying your free time more. During this period, stress levels begin to drop significantly, and people experience an increase in happiness and well-being. After that, your peak of relaxation also decreases a bit, probably because you start thinking about all the obligations at home again. In principle, psychologists would therefore recommend you multiple trips of eight or nine days per year if you want to fully go for relaxation. That would be better for your mental health than short weekend getaways or just one big trip of a month.
Psychologists say that the vacation effects occur in three phases:
- Phase 1: Adjustment (day 1-3): In the first days of vacation, you are still busy acclimatizing and breaking away from your daily routine and stress.
- Phase 2: Deep relaxation (day 4-7): During this phase, you really start to relax and enjoy your vacation. Your stress level is significantly lower, and you experience an increased sense of happiness.
- Phase 3: Preparation for return (day 8 and beyond): Towards the end of the vacation, you start preparing for the return to your daily routine, but the benefits of deep relaxation continue.
A vacation of at least eight days gives you the time to really disconnect from your work and other obligations. This is crucial for mental and physical relaxation, as it gives you the chance to fully focus on rest and enjoyment. Now you know what you should book: happy life guaranteed.
