This is the most personal Netflix drama of the moment

In the world of social media, they can sometimes be hard to avoid: spoilers. Before you know it, the ending of your movie or series has already been revealed. Now you actually don't have to watch anymore, right? Well, that's not entirely true, the Netflix drama (very aptly) ‘Spoiler Alert’ proves that even if you know how it ends, a movie can still touch you. This personal story about the loss of your great love hits hard.
The big spoiler
From scene one, you know: this will not be a happy ending. Entertainment journalist Michael Ausiello (Jim Parsons) lies in a hospital bed with his terminally ill lover Kit Cowan (Ben Aldridge). As a narrator, Michael then takes us through how we got to this point. The two met in a bar and the spark was immediate. They complement each other well and embrace their differences. But after fourteen years together, irritations arise and they decide to take some distance. Just at that moment, Kit is diagnosed with cancer and needs Michael more than ever. Where they initially want to fight for it with all their might and optimism, it soon becomes clear how serious the situation really is.
Michael Ausiello
The story of ‘Spoiler Alert’ is true; in 2015, Kit dies from the effects of cancer. Two years later, Michael writes the book ‘Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies’, the story of their life together and especially the last year. These memoirs are adapted into a film, and Michael is also involved in this. As an executive producer, he ensured that the story was told accurately.
Yet also some humor
Yes, it is an emotional story, but there is still enough humor in it. To keep the film from being too heavy, director Michael Showalter added some lighter scenes. From cute Christmas traditions to flashbacks of Michael's youth. As a true film enthusiast, he experiences everything as a TV series; his childhood is a sitcom for him, complete with a laugh track. It gives a hopeful feeling: even in the darkest days, there are still bright spots. The chemistry between Ben and Jim makes the film extra strong. They portray a realistic, funny, and loving relationship. That is why the ending, despite the spoiler, is still a moment for tissues.
‘Spoiler Alert’ is available on Netflix.
