This new series received a 100% score from Rotten Tomatoes

It sounds a bit confusing: 100% Rotten Tomatoes, that must be really bad. At least, that's what I thought, but luckily for the creators of this new HBO Max series: 100% Rotten Tomatoes is actually a perfect score. But before we all get ready, we want to know what all the buzz is about. ‘Como agua para chocolate’ (or ‘Like water for chocolate’) is based on the book by Mexican author Laura Esquivel, and now transformed into a beautiful series by, among others, Salma Hayek (she is the executive producer).

This is not the first time this story has been so successful

Salma Hayek took six years to bring this series to life in the way she deemed fitting. It’s not just any story; the film adaptation came out in 1992 and it is still one of the most successful foreign language films in the United States ever. It’s truly a classic, so it was quite a challenge for the team to create a worthy new version. The series is about a family where quite a few complicated matters are at play: Tita is deeply in love with Pedro, but because her mother demands that she takes care of her until her death, she refuses to let Tita marry him. Instead, Tita’s sister must marry Pedro. He agrees to this, but only so he can stay close to Tita. Tita pours all her feelings into the food she prepares. Literally. Because when Tita cooks or bakes when she is sad, everyone who eats it becomes just as sad. It’s hard to explain what this all brings about, but the mix between a Romeo & Juliet-like romance and the magic of what food can do to you makes it a delightful series to watch.

We are lucky: the first episodes are already online

So you can start watching right away. Salma Hayek has one big wish: “I hope the series inspires viewers to do everything with attention and joy and that they do not forget to celebrate the beautiful life lessons we often take for granted, such as food, family, and the people who support us.” So make your favorite comfort food and gather your dearest friends and family for a binge-watching night.
