When thinking of ice baths, one probably thinks of Arie Boomsma, but especially of the ‘Iceman’: Wim Hof. He is the man who popularized immersion in ice water because he developed a breathing technique that makes you no longer feel how cold the water actually is. I have never really delved into it, so apart from finding it funny to participate in the New Year's dive a few times, I see no reason to let myself sink into a tub full of ice. But since there are said to be various health benefits, the technique naturally became extremely popular in Hollywood in no time. Suddenly, we saw ‘our’ Dutch Wim Hof in photos with Oprah Winfrey and Jim Carrey, and people like Miley Cyrus, Jason Momoa, Justin Bieber, and David Beckham proudly share that they follow the Wim Hof method.

After writing 5 books about his method and his story of how he became ’the Iceman’, an English film producer thought it was time for a film about Wim Hof's life. Being careful, the production team decided to contact his ex-wife, Caroline. He has 1 son with her, but Caroline already had 3 children from a previous relationship. However, Caroline was shocked when they contacted her. Her life with Wim Hof was not exactly pleasant, as well as he can control his body temperature, he apparently cannot control himself when it comes to aggression. Caroline and her children were abused by Wim for years. And for those who doubt this: he has indeed been convicted for it.

The production of the film is now on hold. The producer is probably also doubting whether it is such a good plan to film the life story of a narcissist . Others believe that the Iceman has served his sentence and should now be allowed to start with a clean slate. But I would really be surprised if this film ever comes to fruition. Caroline and her children have been undergoing trauma therapy for a few years to process the years with Wim. I hope it has not been in vain, that she has gathered the courage to tell their story.
