Why the breasts of Bridgerton are so important

There has been so much discussion about the nude scenes in Bridgerton. It seems like the conversation about Nicola Coughlan's body, a.k.a. Penelope Featherington, never stops. Everyone has an opinion about it, whether it's positive or negative, and those opinions need to be shared (or so they think). But what interests me much more than the naked bodies of the actors are the breasts of the female characters.

Because you could say: they are presented on a silver platter. The cinched bodies create a sort of plateau of breasts, where even the smallest breasts seem enormous. Of course, this led to extra criticism of Nicola's breasts, because they are not small to begin with. If you think she is upset about that, you are mistaken. Nicola actually asked for nude scenes in the series. Her reason? She explained: ‘It just felt like the biggest ‘fuck you’ to all the conversations around my body; it was incredibly empowering. I felt beautiful at that moment and I thought: when I'm 80, I want to look back on this and remember how damn good I looked!’

Hopefully, this will have the effect she wants to create: that curvy women can also be proud of their bodies without others feeling the need to give their opinion about it.
