Why you really should visit Volendam at least once

Maybe this weekend

By

“There are so many attractive people here.” My friend has moved near Volendam and lovingly tells that it is a lot hipper there than we all think. It’s not like everyone walks around in clogs and traditional costumes. If it really were that sleepy, Jan Smit, Nick and Simon, and the 3J’s would surely step over the village border once in a while, but Volendam is just lovely. I was there this week to take my daughter to her first-year camp and had to keep pushing my mouth shut with my hand every minute because it kept dropping open in amazement. It’s just cute, Volendam. Rarely cute. So you have to go there. That’s what I think. And yes, maybe this weekend.

It’s just a big movie set that you walk on.
The houses, the famous dike, the fish auction, the Frisian flat-bottomed boats in the harbor, the terraces: it’s a big, Dutch postcard.

It’s low in traffic.
So ideal if you want to go to Volendam with children and it’s wonderfully quiet anyway. There is plenty of parking space outside the little center.

Take an e-bike tour.
And then stop by Marken and Monnickendam.

Lunch at Romy’s Kitchen.
There you can eat delicious avocado toast or a quinoa bowl and they also have a wonderful high tea.

Eat cheese.
Volendam is of course right next to Edam and that happens to be the royal supplier of those funny, round cheeses. My father is crazy about them.

Buy and eat a fish.

Take a boat trip to Marken.

And oh, if you’re there anyway: take that photo in traditional costume.
Just for fun.
