BROERS podcast has stopped: this is what we know

By

The BROERS podcast is stopping and you probably haven't missed it. Yes, really. The podcast by Sam and Rijk Hofman – good for over 200 episodes, a gigantic fanbase, and its own mini-empire on Petje.af – has stopped immediately since last week. The news came on May 5, 2025, via Instagram, without trumpets, bells, or any form of ceremony. And let's be honest: it felt a bit like your favorite series suddenly ends without a final episode. Do you understand the panic -uhg?

“Is this a... joke?” No.

“Well, the announcement of the end was shared via the official BROERS Instagram, just through a funny video (together with Daniël Arends). You can watch the video here. Yes, I know, it looks like a joke, but later Sam and Rijk reposted the video and thanked their listeners for everything. Sounds cynical, right? But also the Petje.af page (where all exclusive content was shared) is now silent. Fans reacted as you might expect: in shock, angry, sad, and above all: in disbelief - because yes, why would you suddenly announce it so casually out of nowhere? Broers uploaded an episode on Spotify and YouTube, lasting 47 seconds, in which they say that the ‘dollo update tune’ was really the last straw. ‘I'm just stopping too,’ says Rijk.

And that might be the most frustrating part: the brothers give no clear reason. “We're both going to do other things,” said Rijk. And that was that. No juice so -unfortunately for us. At least, as far as we know. They did promise a farewell moment, but so far it remains at this.

Where it all began

On January 18, 2021, the BROERS podcast started and the first episode, ‘Brand new house on fire’, went online (here you can read an article from BROERS when they just started). Since then, the two brothers have uploaded various episodes in which they talk to each other without a filter about sex, love, drinks, parties, friendships, and other craziness. The podcast was well received, and people loved the banter of the two brothers. Not surprising then that BROERS won several awards – including the Pop Media Prize, a top 3 ranking at the Dutch Podcast Awards, and a spot on Spotify's list of most listened to Dutch podcasts.

Petje.af is a thing of the past

In addition to the (200!) free episodes, the podcast also had a closed community via Petje.af. Fans could donate and received extra content in return. But with the show's end, that page has also been taken offline. So for those who thought: maybe something exclusive will still trickle through? Nope. It's over. Finito. Bye-bye.

But why is BROERS really stopping?

Was it a joke? Was there a fight? Is Sam going to Expeditie Robinson? Yup, I've seen that last speculation come by too. Well, the rumor mill is of course running at full speed. One of the most persistent theories: Sam would participate in Expeditie Robinson. The recordings are indeed in full swing in May. But unfortunately for conspiracy fans: someone recently saw Sam happily walking in Amsterdam, so we can cross that theory off. And also: the two brothers would be smart enough to record some extra episodes if he were to participate in Expeditie, right?

“We want to do other things,” they say. And although that makes some sense – both brothers have their hands more than full – it still feels a bit like being dumped with “it's not you, it's me.” By the way, you can read about being dumped here, also a bit fun - or well, not really.

What are Rijk and Sam going to do?

Sam Hofman: Sam has always been the calmer of the two. A bit the Dylan of the duo. Smart, sharp, fashionable without trying to be. On Instagram, he has recently been showing that he is happily charting his own course in the DJ world. According to rumors, he is working behind the scenes on a new media or music project, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Love status? Well, Sam is always a bit more mysterious in that regard. Although Rijk shares everything, Sam is a bit quieter about it. No official flame in sight, but also no heartbreak content.

Rijk Hofman: The more extroverted half of the duo has mainly focused on his YouTube channel –as always, duh. He remains active on Instagram and will surely come up with something cool again soon. About his love life? Well, do you have a moment? Names like Monica Geuze, Indigo, Nikki Wilde, and Stephanie Abu-Sbeih have come up.

What do we think about it?

I get it. Sometimes it's just time to close something. Sometimes at your peak, but according to the guys themselves: this time at a low point. But it does feel a bit abrupt. As if you're at a party and the host suddenly says: “Bye, I'm going to sleep.” What we miss is closure, a good final episode, and a compilation of the best moments.

What remains?

A solid 200 episodes that you can listen to again on Spotify. Quotes, inside jokes, and the knowledge that two brothers – with totally different characters – have created something that brought a smile to thousands of people every week and provided a distraction from reality. Looking for a new podcast to laugh until your stomach hurts? I always listen to ”Your Favorite Podcast” with Sean, Stefan, and Julia - really a listening tip.
