Charlotte de Witte opens and closes Tomorrowland
a techno fairy tale from Belgian soil

Charlotte de Witte opened and closed Tomorrowland this year. With that, she made history as the first female artist to ever do so — and that while the festival itself faced setbacks. But Charlotte? She dug her heels in the sand (or on the stage) and gave us a musical highlight that you felt in your spine.
Drama on the dance floor and beyond
Tomorrowland 2025 started tumultuously. Literally. The main stage partially burned down the day before the opening and the festival was overshadowed by the sad news of a visitor's passing. But as often happens with festivals (and life): amidst the drama, beauty blooms.
Enter: Charlotte de Witte
Charlotte de Witte – queen of techno, minimal mistress, Belgian power woman – was the musical centerpiece of the festival. She opened the Mainstage on Saturday, July 19 during the Daybreak set, a first for a female artist. Think deep beats, a rising sun, and an audience that adored her from the very first second.
And then… the evening came. And Charlotte returned. But this time as the closing act. She closed the festival with a raw, energetic techno set that made you bounce on your sneakers. The audience, now danced out, was awakened again by her hypnotic sound.

A historic moment on the biggest stage in the world
It is the very first time that an artist – let alone a woman – takes on both the opening and closing of the Mainstage of Tomorrowland. And if you know that Charlotte in 2011 she gave her very first major performance on this same stage (after winning a DJ contest from Studio Brussel), then you understand that this was not just a performance but a moment.

Belgian women at the turntables
Charlotte is not the only Belgian DJ making waves internationally. Amelie Lens – known for her deep, immersive sets – is also a techno queen from the very beginning. She was recently on the cover of Dutch Vogue because she is not only good but also a style icon. With her label Lenske, she brings a whole new generation of female DJs to the forefront.

More than a set: a statement
What Charlotte showed at Tomorrowland is more than just mixing a series of tracks together. It is a statement. About being a woman in a man's world. About growing, returning, and coming back bigger. About having endurance in an industry that is rarely gentle. And above all: about doing what you love, at your own pace, to your own beat. Or as she beautifully said herself: “Back in 2011, opening the Mainstage changed my life. In 2022… I became the first techno and female act to close it. Now in 2025… I will be both opening and closing on the same day – a full-circle, 360-degree moment I’ll never forget.”
