Pandoro-gate: Should Chiara Ferragni be quiet?

By

Once, Chiara Ferragni's entire life seemed to have a pink layer. She had a cool, successful man, a child, millions of followers, and a whole lot of lucrative collaborations. From shoes with her signature eyes to chewing gum and everything in between. In her quest for even more success, things went wrong. Chiara came up with a collaboration with a Pandoro cake, a type of panettone, that dry cake they eat in Italy around Christmas and which I suspect is their oliebol. To be honest, it's not edible, but out of sentiment, you pretend it's delicious. Anyway. Yes, you read that right, the pandoro cake. And there, that's where it went wrong. That twisted cake could very well be a major chapter in her life story. A story that is still being written in court. But how did it come to this?

The cake that changed everything

It all started so festively. Chiara, with her millions of followers, decided to launch a special Christmas cake together with pastry chef Balocco. It was a pandoro in a beautiful package with Chiara's name on it. The cake was not only supposed to become a must-have Christmas treat, but it was also heavily advertised that the proceeds would go to a children's hospital in Turin . A fantastic idea, in short.

But the truth came to light: the proceeds from the cake sales did not go to the good cause at all. No, there was only a one-time donation of €50.000 made before the campaign, but the rest of the sales? That just stayed in the pockets of the brand and Chiara herself. And that was misleading according to the Italian consumer watchdog. And according to the unsolicited opinion of thousands of other people as well. Even Giorgia Meloni got involved.

From Instagram to the courtroom

The Italian authorities decided to prosecute Chiara for fraud. And that was just the beginning of the cake scene that would continue to haunt her name. The case resulted in a fine of more than 1 million euros for Chiara, but the stories were not over yet.

Fast forward to 2025. While the rest of Italy was happily enjoying their Pandoro, Chiara suddenly found herself not in a front row seat, but in the courtroom of Milan. And there was a lawyer opposite her demanding that she serve 1 year and 8 months behind bars. That's not exactly the kind of ‘high moment’ you dream of as an influencer.

Why a cake has so many consequences

In fact, this is not just about an innocent mistake, as Chiara would have us believe, but about a much larger discussion about transparency and accountability. Chiara's case symbolizes the broader issue of influencers trying to entice their audience with a smile and a ‘good cause’ in the background to make purchases. This is not just a ‘slip of the tongue’ – this is a case that puts the relationship between influencers and their followers on edge.

And so here we are now, with Chiara Ferragni who has chosen an expedited process, perhaps hoping that she will spend less time behind bars and more in the front row. Her lawyers continue to insist that she has done nothing wrong, but that they simply relied on her company's marketing department and that everything has since been arranged. She has indeed transferred that million, but she has never paid the fine.

The consequences for her image (and for the cake)

What does this mean for Chiara? While her fans sympathize with her, her image is being put to the test. The reality is that this “cake-gate” has severely damaged her brand. This was not the sparkly moment she hoped for. Instead of a Christmas campaign that would touch her fans' hearts, it seems she is now more in the legal spotlight.

This has certainly not helped her status as a fashion icon. The chances are high that we will soon read more reports about collaborations that are delayed, brand contracts that are on hold and sponsors withdrawing.

Chiara behind bars?

Chiara may have the final word on December 19, 2025. And in January 2026, we will receive a definitive ruling on this lawsuit. What does this mean for her? A prison sentence? More fines? Or will it all turn out well, with a bit of luck, a hefty dose of strategic settling, swallowing, and apologies.

However it ends, this cake will always have a bit of a bitter aftertaste for Chiara. It would have had that for me anyway, but now even more so.
