Expedition debrief: Betrayal, betrayal, betrayal
Episode 2

Expedition Robinson is, at least for me, mainly fun for two reasons: the challenges that seem to get more intense each season, and the scheming about who will be the scapegoat during the island council. Especially on that last point, we were treated to a lot last night, and that while it was only the second episode. It became clear once again, trust is a vague concept in this program. Promises are written in the sand, and just as easily washed away.

The expedition has a twist again
Aside from the team division into tribes and camps, the expedition seemed to start as we know it. Camp North had a broken night on their meager island, but South also didn't sleep well. You might have a bed frame, but if everything sags halfway through the night, it doesn't do you much good. But while they can still recover a bit, North has to get to work for the first duel. After quite a few theories about what is best for the tribes and the team, Yesim and Vincent get to face each other. With the comforting thought that the loser can still play back via the loser island. Well, not so much. The tribe leaders didn't quite realize that ‘won't return’ would mean that someone actually goes to house would go. No ‘your expedition isn't over yet’ this season, but just an immediate return ticket; with Yesim as the first recipient. That twist hits hard.

What do we say again about pride?
No time to mourn, there must be a fight for immunity. Although this challenge is completely different from the first, we somehow fall into repetition. Camp North manages to take a quick lead again, although South is hot on their heels. Nordin doesn't see it going wrong anymore, that immunity totem is within reach. He immediately learns a hard lesson: in Robinson, everything can suddenly turn around. Chaos and miscommunication turn the challenge completely upside down and it's again Camp South that gets to cheer. The disbelief at North is great. For us, a little less. Who also thought that Churandy, Olympic runner, wouldn't get the task to run? The upcoming island council also has a small surprise: only one of the tribes is in danger, and a duel will determine which one that will be. The relationships among them are immediately tense again.

Match-fixing as the ultimate tactic
Lies and Twan are faced with a dilemma again. Do they choose their own tribe, or the group interest of Camp North? That second option seems to weigh a bit heavier. Vincent and Roelof are seen as the weakest links and so Twan's tribe must lose the duel. And how do you make sure that happens? With a little help from match-fixing. The tribe leaders go into battle themselves, to keep the outcome in their own hands. For Lies, this will probably be the only relaxed duel she will play this expedition, she knows she will win anyway. Well, that's what she thought. Twan is really trying to lose, we have to give him that, but the game suits him too well. The perfectly thought-out plan falls apart. Lies has to go to the island council with her tribe and will lose someone again. What makes this a bit more painful: Twan, the big saboteur, is also allowed to cast a vote on behalf of his tribe.

Who can be trusted?
Now that all agreements have been washed away, the outcome of the island council is much more uncertain. Especially Nordin feels the panic; as the only man in his tribe, he automatically has a target on his back. He therefore aims his arrows at Roos and hopes for some allies. Twan seems easily convinced, but we've seen before that his promises offer no certainty. Demi is in a huge dilemma; does she choose her buddy Nordin, or her girls? After a close call, it's Roos who sees her expedition dream shatter. She tries not to take it personally, but the anger prevails. Demi has let her down and Twan's betrayal goes too far. He isn't even granted a farewell hug. The tone is set, experienced Expedition Robinson it's going to be a tough season.
